People place limits on themselves for many reasons, some good and some bad. I have noticed that people often limit themselves when it comes to learning. When I hear the words “I can’t do that, I don’t know how” my response is always “then learn how”. Learning can be a challenge and it does require work, but there is nothing we cannot learn if we are willing to learn without limits.
Learning without limits was a lesson that I did not comprehend until I was a grown adult. My parents did plant the seed, but I did not understand how important it was until I was a parent. Now as a mom and home school family learning without limits is a way of life that I try to instill in my children.
I have learned that some children are born with little to no limits where others impose limits naturally. In our family we have two children that are natural limit setters and two that live life with no limits. It is fun to see how the children who know no limits challenge the ones who are content, and the children who are content caution those who know no bounds. There is no doubt that they are good for each other in keeping balance.
Through having a confidence in reading and utilizing hands on learning, the world of possibilities is endless. When we equip our children with the tools they need to learn, they will amaze us in their ability to learn. My brother did this time and again growing up. He would find some radio or small engine that was considered “junk”, and drag it home. He would spend the next few days tinkering and asking for a few dollars here or there to go to the parts store. Just when we were certain that he would never have it fixed, he would have it up and running.
My goal as a home schooling mom is to teach my children how to teach themselves. I want my children to have a good foundation in all subjects, but I want them to realize that there are no limits to what they can learn. There is no doubt that life will give them challenges and being able to learn a new skill, or learn a new subject in-depth will help them through the challenges. Whenever one of the kids tells me that they don’t know how to do something or they think it is too hard, I encourage them to learn without limits.

I have thought about this a lot lately. Learning – desiring to learn and truly putting into practice what we learn. At what point does the human brain actually wake up – Knowledge and Wisdom come from God… it’s interesting to consider that when teaching my children – see what they ‘get’ and what they do not ‘get’… Great post.

Great post!! I completely agree with the “No limits to learning” approach. I homeschool my 10 year old son, and he is constantly learning. Be it in his work or play, I make sure to try my best to help him understand. As far as class time goes, we have a motto, “If the work seems hard, you work harder.” Once again, great post!
