Homeschool ~ Trying Something New

by HSVillage 1 Comment

It is a new year! It is time to get started on a fresh new semester. I don’t know about you, but I like to change things up to keep it interesting around here. I find that when things get too routine my children zone out on me.

So for the new semester we are going to be trying a block style schedule. There are certain subjects we will continue to do daily like Bible, Spelling and Math. I think the repetition is very important for my little ones in math and spelling. This is very new to us, but I think it will work good for my family. My kids really enjoy when things are changed up. We are going to try out the schedule for a bit to see how it works for us.

  • Monday- Grammar and History
  • Tuesday- Writing and Science
  • Wednesday-Grammar and History
  • Thursday- Writing and Science
  • Friday- Grammar and Latin

My current planner is perfect for being able to schedule as you want. I use the Ultimate Homeschool Planner from Apologia. It works great for me since I like to change things up from time to time.

I hope everyone has a fantastic new year and a very productive semester!

How do you plan your school week? I always love to hear what others have found to work for their children.

I too decided to swap things up a bit for this semester. I have a 12 yr old in 6th grade, a 10 yr old in the end of 4th grade, a 6 yr old in 2nd grade, and 5 yr old in kindergarten. We use a curriculum base studies and were doing 5-6 subjects a day. We weren’t getting done until almost 4 pm everyday, we start around 8 am. I decided to do math everyday and add two – three other subjects per day. This gets us done shortly after lunch and allows me to get some housework done and have supper ready by 6 pm. I use a regular calendar planner for school as I don’t like too much extras in “My Book.” Those extras tend to be a distraction for me. Plus, should the day ever arise, my hubby could simply look at the book and be able to easily follow along.
