Bringing Fun Into Your Homeschool

Let’s face it. This is the point in the school year when the new has worn off, and everyone is counting down till summer break. There are winter blahs happening all throughout our house. It is time throw those little ones for  loop with  bit of surprise every now and then.

Here are some fun ways to spice up your homeschool to beat those winter blahs.

• Try printing some fun printables

My kiddos love when I start printing some fun coloring sheets or word finds. I don’t know why it is more fun than a workbook, but for some reason when it is printed straight from the computer, it makes it more interesting.

• Spend a few days on a unit study focused around your child’s interest.

What do they really enjoy learning about? For my oldest it is dinosaurs. So for him I would print out a unit on dinosaurs. You can learn so much more than the basic dino facts. You can throw a lesson on climate, geography, and so much more just using dinosaurs as a starting point. It keeps his attention, and breaks up the mundane.

• Use board games for math or geography

Try using games like Monopoly to help with counting money. Scrabble for spelling and vocabulary. Risk for geography. There are so many creative ways of using everyday board games. We even have a Wii game called Active Life that I can plug-in for rainy day PE.

• Use educational puzzles

Map puzzles are pretty easy to come by. Try using an US map puzzle for teaching the states, or a world map for more global geography. For the younger ones there are plenty of matching, color, and alphabet style puzzles.

• Throw in some fun hands on projects

This pretty much goes without saying. What kid doesn’t love getting to make homemade putty? Getting to make something brings another element into the learning process. Try making cookies to help with learning measurements.

The beauty of homeschooling is that you have so many options. It can be easy to get stuck in a rut, but changing things up here and there can really help to break up the boredom that can sometimes come with routine.
