Faith Starts in the Cradle
Have you ever snuggled an infant and had them start breathing in unison with you? Or as you make humming sounds they start to mimic them? I have always snuggled and made a sound unique to each of my little ones. They started early to return that sound to me and would often make that sound once they got a little older and would see me coming when they call. It was “our” special love song. Just like with sounds and touch memory, I feel that teaching faith starts when our little ones are still in the cradle. When children are young, they are like a sponge. They soak up everything they see and hear. Why not use that time to teach them things that will help carry them through life?
When our children were little, I sang to them and taught them songs of faith long before songs of spiders. Jesus Loves Me was probably the first song my little ones could sing on their own, but they would hum along with my singing as I rocked them to The Old Rugged Cross, Fill My Cup Lord, and Amazing Grace. Oh how my heart was touched to know they were taking in words of faith that would be able to sustain them in later years.
Teaching them the parables and history in the Bible brought the words of faith alive as they grew up. Praying was also started as soon as they were born, even before as I had prayed over each of them while carrying them inside me. One of my favorite ways to pray is using the A.C.T.S. model of prayer. And while it is easy to demonstrate, words like A = adoration, C = confession, T = thanksgiving, and S = supplication were way over their heads and level of understanding. They did understand words like Wow, I’m Sorry, Thank You, and Please. These were the words we used to teach them how to pray.
Learning the stories of the Bible not only teach the love and goodness of God, it teaches them lessons on love, obedience, and being strong. We used children’s books to reinforce our story time.
Recently, I received an updated version of a favored children’s bible that we have loved for years. The Beginner’s Bible: Timeless Children’s Stories has been refreshed with beautiful new art work to go along with the stories.
