Spray Heart Art

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Here’s a simple heart  project to do!

Supplies:

Spray bottles
food coloring
water color paper or cardstock
hearts cut from cardstock or cardboard
masking tape
stamps (optional)
black paint (optional)

Directions:

First tape the hearts onto water color paper or cardstock. You want the hearts to be as flat as possible but not tacked down too well that they can’t be removed later. These hearts will be used as masks on the Spray Heart Art piece.

Fill spray bottles up with water and add food coloring colors of your choice. We picked pink, purple, and red. Hand a spray bottle to a child and let them spray the paper.  (Note: Food coloring can stain certain surfaces. Make sure you have the surrounding area covered well.)

We first taped ours up on the glass door, but the girls were pretty heavy-handed with the spray bottle trigger. I was worried the water would run under our heart masks so I ended up placing an old towel on the floor and letting them spray away. Once the paper was dry I removed the hearts.

We decided to decorate our heart art with stamps. We picked out the X and O stamp, black paint and a foam paint brush. You could use sticker letters, write a phrase with calligraphy markers, or leave as-is.

You can see how the hearts masked out the spray and left the white showing. The girls thought that was cool (they are preschoolers so it wasn’t too hard to impress–lol.)

We hung ours on clipboards in the living room. Such an easy way to decorate for Valentine’s day.
