The holidays are over. The fun and excitement has ended.
It’s February. The thrill of the new year has passed and given way to dark, cold, long winter days.
Yes, it’s official. The winter blahs have set in.
Everyone’s situation is different. Your blahs may stem from the fact that the bitter cold keeps you and the kids cooped up inside all day, every day. If you’re like me, it may be the fact that you haven’t felt the warm sun and sand between your toes in too many months. Your family may be suffering from a major case of cabin fever.
You may be in a state of post-holiday blues. You were so excited about the holidays and now that it’s over you’re feeling a little down.
Your household may have been plagued with winter colds and flus for the past several weeks and you’re ready for a break.
Whatever the cause, a surefire way to beat the winter blahs is with a change of scenery.
Is an impromptu family vacation possible? This is a major advantage of homeschooling: off-season winter rates! (Psst- Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg, VA is having a homeschool special- ALL rooms (sleeps up to 8) are $139/night and that price includes water park tickets for each guest. Offer valid 2/10-2/15 and 2/17-2/22 with promo code “0213HOME”.) My family tries to plan our family vacations for September and February to take advantage of lower rates and less crowds.
If an all out family vacay isn’t possible, what about a weekend getaway, or a day trip? Explore a nearby city. Visit out of town family.
Plan a field trip. Visit a local museum, planetarium or historical site. Colonial Williamsburg is having their Winter Homeschooler Experience 2/16-2/24. Check it out!
Have a family fun day. Go roller skating, ice skating, or bowling. Try a new restaurant.

The options are endless. Anything that changes the normal, mundane winter day into a fun, exciting day!
You know your family. What would they enjoy? What can you afford? Consult with your husband. Choose a date and now the fun part comes- build excitement!
Tell the kids your plan and let them look forward to your adventure. Countdown the days…and GO!
No matter if it’s one day or ten days. Make the most of it. Make memories. Take lots of photos and kiss the winter blahs good bye!
Spring is right around the corner!
And for me, well my daughters and I will be sailing off on the Carnival Paradise to Cozumel and Grand Cayman! Take that, winter blahs!
